Classics Club Spin #5

Time for another Classics Club Spin!  So far I have participated in two, which has led to me readind Rebecca (awesome) and Les Miserables (at least it is out of the way).  I am crazily indecisive about what to read at the moment (I blame the pregnancy hormones), so I'm looking forward to the decision being taken out of my hands.  Of the twenty books I've listed below, one will be selected for me on Monday by a random number posted on the Classics Club blog.

Like last time, I've used random.org to select twenty books off my list.  This time I'm including rereads, by which I mean books I already planned to reread for the Classics Club, not books I've read since joining.

My list:
  1. 1984 by George Orwell (reread)
  2. Villette by Charlotte Bronte (reread)
  3. Othello by William Shakespeare
  4. Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert (reread)
  5. Little Dorrit by Charles Dickens
  6. Anthony and Cleopatra by William Shakespeare
  7. The Portrait of a Lady by Henry James
  8. Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie
  9. Lord of the Flies by William Golding
  10. Mansfield Park by Jane Austen
  11. Titus Groan by Mervyn Peake
  12. Moby Dick by Herman Melville
  13. The Painted Veil by W. Somerset Maugham
  14. Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte (reread)
  15. The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Bronte
  16. The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde (reread)
  17. Hard Times by Charles Dickens
  18. The Lost World by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (reread)
  19. The Return of the King by J.R.R. Tolkein (reread, and I'm up to this point in the series).
  20. Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston
Initial thoughts - anything but Moby Dick!  I'll be genuinely excited to read any of the others, but I don't know if I'm up for the whale after Les Miserables in December.  I'm especially hoping for Tenant of Wildfell Hall or any of the rereads.

Are you taking part in the spin?  If so, link me to your list, as I'd love to see what your options are.

  1. I fail miserably at this every time I try, so I think I'm going to sit this one out. Plus, planning a wedding and all. :-|

    1. But you're normally such an organised reader, I'm always impressed with your progress through your TBR lists.

  2. Looks like a great list! Totally know what you mean about not wanting the whooper, I'm hoping Gone with the Wind doesn't come up for me. Here's my list: http://ted-reader.blogspot.co.uk/2014/02/the-classics-club-spin.html

    1. Gone With the Wind is so good though, you don't even feel the length. Still, I hope you get a book you're excited to start.

  3. I think that's why I love the idea of this so much - it's hard to pick from my 49 remaining books because I do want to read them all and it makes my life easier if somebody else will tell me which to read.

I studied Lord of the Flies as a GCSE text and I was fascinated by it. Obviously that was quite a long time ago now so I do want to read it as an adult and see if I still find it as interesting.

I completely wimped out from even including Moby Dick on my list! It just doesn't appeal to me at all so I couldn't even commit to reading it within the next five years. Still, if you are super unlucky and it does come up - I hope you love it!

    1. My opinion towards my list changes over time - some of the books I was very keen to read almost 2 years ago don't appeal to me as much now, but some appeal even more. I'm determined to keep the same list, though.

Moby Dick appeals to me enough for me to vaguely think 'I want to read that someday'.....just not any day soon!

  4. There are so many great books on your list! I loved The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, The Painted Veil and Titus Groan. I wasn't brave enough to put Moby Dick on my list, but I would be hoping to avoid that one too.

    1. I've actually started Titus Groan, but ended up putting it down as I wasn't in the right mood for it. I loved the atmosphere though.

  5. I didn't do the last spin but I loved the first 2. Hmmm...maybe I'll jump in again?

    Good luck!

  6. I know what you mean about Moby Dick. After reading The Count of Monte Cristo in January I chickened out of putting Les Miserables on my spin list this time around.

    1. That's not chickening out, that's a normal reaction! I felt a bit drained after finishing Les Mis, it wouldn't be a good book to follow another chunky classic like Count of Monte Cristo.

  7. I loved Tenant, so hope that numbers comes up for you. Good luck on Monday!

  8. This list is wonderful, so many of my favorites. I would be rooting for the Tenant also, as I love the Brontes and that is one I have not read. So happy to discover your lovely blog!

    1. It's one of my last Brontes too - in a way I want to read it right now, but a part of me wants to save it for as long as possible!

  9. Great list, Sam! I can't wait to see what everyone gets though I won't be participating myself this time around - I have too many eGalleys to get to this month.

  10. Moby Dick is so good though! I thought it would be, you know, the worst, but I had to read it for Uni and ended up LOVING it. Ah, whales and stuff...
