Sam Sunday #25

Another week of the holidays over!  I had some disappointing news this week, so I've been cheering myself up with decorating and working on the house.  The main bedroom is almost done (it WILL be done by this time next week), but while we were waiting for the carpet fitters, I decided to tackle the space under the stairs.  Until a few days ago, this was basically a junk area full of all the things we hadn't unpacked yet.  But now it's a cosy working/blogging area with a new desk.  It's still a work in progress as I'm hoping to get some storage for the folders etc to the right of the desk.  Eventually we will get the hallway re-plastered, so ignore the dark wood on the wall and the dingy colour of the wall itself.  But it's nice to have an area to sit and blog or journal.  I haven't had a desk since moving out of my parents house four and a bit years ago, so it's still a luxury at the moment.

And then because I needed even more cheering up than that, I dyed my hair red.  I used to have bright red (think Coca-Cola can red) hair as a teenager but then I got a job in a bank and had to have a more natural looking colour so it turned into brown.  For the last couple of years I have had my natural hair colour, which is mousy brown/dark blonde.  It's only a semi-permanent and it's a subtle red, but I'm happy with it.

I've been reading a lot this week.  I'm taking part in Adam's Austen in August event, for which I'm hoping to reread one Austen (Emma) and then also read a new to me Austen, which will more than likely be Northanger Abbey.  Because I can't read Austen for hours at a time, I've been reading other books concurrently too.  This week, I've been reading:

  1. The-under-the-stairs-corner looks really cosy :) And I love the hair colour, I used to have something very similar at some point when I was younger, but since then I've really been just too lazy to do much with my hair (the horror when it's a more permanent colour and then it starts growing out and gaaah), although you know, maybe, some day I'll also get inspired by a shade of red.

    1. Growing out coloured hair is the worst, I've had a few pixie cuts in my time because of that!

  2. Love that hair color on you! Pretty pretty :) I really like that cozy computer nook you have there. I'd love to find a cozier spot for my desk. Hmmm..I'm going to look into that!

    1. I grew up in a tiny tiny room (it was literally the size of a double bed), so I have a thing for small, cosy spaces. Good luck finding one of your own :)

  3. That hair colour looks great on you! I'm currently using my lap or the dining table as a desk so I'm loving your cosy corner. I'm finding I can't read only Austen either so I'm just about to start Lamb. Isn't The Wild Girl amazing/heartbreaking/beautiful?!

    1. I've used the dining table/my lap for a long time, so a desk is amazing. The Wild Girl is SO GOOD, I've just been typing up my review for tomorrow.

  4. Your hair looks gorgeous! If I were ever going to dye my hair (but I'm too frightened to ever do it), that's the color I would dye it. So pretty.

    1. I've dyed my hair a lot, but then I don't mind having very short hair, so if it goes wrong I know I can always chop it off....

  5. What a cute desk! That's exactly the kind of thing I'd like to have - if I had the space for it (currently using the dining table!)

    1. It's a John Lewis desk, I just love their furniture.
And there's nothing wrong with the dining table, I was using it for years!

  6. Love your blogging area. You hair color looks very nice.

The desk is very cute and roomy. Lots of storage space too. ENJOY your new "digs." :)

I haven't read any of those books you read this week.

  7. Your blogging area looks great, and so does your hair!
I also cannot read Austen for hours at a time, and I also read other books along with Emma.

    Kind regards,

    1. I would love to read Austen for hours at a time, but I find it too heavy...or maybe it's too much work for my brain? Either way, I need regular breaks!

  8. I'm really really troubled by the cover of Tampa...

I loooove your little under the stairs workspace, it looks so neat and lovely! And the flowery things! :) YAY stuff is what I'm saying, really!

    1. It's such an icky cover but having read the book, I can say that it is perfect for it. I felt like I needed to wash my brain after finishing it, but boy was it powerful.

Your new hair color is very pretty and it looks natural. :)

  10. Sam, your new hair looks both gorgeous and super natural. Would you ask me, I'd say it's your natural hair colour!

I agree with you. Whenever I need to cheer up, a visit to my hairdresser usually helps (except last time when I asked for Jessica Chastain hair and came out with flashy red hair). Sometimes, life is better with your hair done!

And congrats on your desk, a place of your own :)

  12. Lovely hair color! I've always wanted to go red, but am too timid to try.
I love your new blogging/office area. I have a whole room for an office, but I never use it - probably because it is kind of dull and unorganized.
I wish I could join in the Austen month, but I have so many ARCs to catch up on right now - enjoy your reading!

  13. I finished Northanger Abbey this weekend, and it was a lot of fun. Very light and the take on gothic fiction cracked me up. I hope you enjoy it! And I love your hair!

I hope you enjoy Northanger Abbey. It's one of my favorites.
