Bout of Books 8.0 Update #2

I've been having fun with Bout of Books all week.  Normally I am a strictly monogamous sort of reader but when I am off work, I find that I'm much more able to read multiple things at once and still keep up with the plots of all of them.  I've not read constantly, but I have been enjoying the reading I have managed to fit in.  At the moment, I've finished two books and am mid-way through two more.

After my last update on Wednesday, I continued with The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan and A Reliable Wife by Robert Goolrick.  I've been reading A Reliable Wife with Elena this week and she has already finished it.  I'm a bit behind as I've been reading maybe 20-50 pages or so a day rather than focusing all my attention on it.  I wasn't a fan of the opening sections as the writing is pretty weak at times, but it has improved as I have gone on.  I'm currently 166 pages in and have just over a hundred left.  I will probably finish this one today.

I'm still loving my reread of The Eye of the World, the first book in the Wheel of Time series.  Before starting it I could remember literally nothing (I first read it about seven years ago) but it's surprising how quickly it has all come back.  There's nothing like epic fantasy to escape to in the holidays.  I'm currently 327 pages in, which is not even half way yet.

And then this morning I visited the library to pick up some holds, one of which was Storybook Love, the third volume in the Fables series, about fairytale characters living in secret in New York.  Graphic novels are perfect for readathons so I picked it up straight away and literally flew through it.  I found it to be a mixed bag, I loved two of the four stories, but the other two felt like filler.  It was 190 pages.

I'm hoping for some quality reading time this weekend as my husband is at the Frightfest film festival, which is basically a five day long festival of horror films.  Horror films are really not my thing, so I've opted to stay at home.  It is pouring with rain outside and the temperature has dropped, so it's the perfect day to ignore the housework/ prep for September I should be doing and curl up with a book.

If you're doing Bout of Books, how are you getting on?

Statistics:

Books Started: 4
Books Completed: 2 (Dare Me and Storybook Love)
Pages Read: 326 + 190 + 166 + 327 = 1009 (awesome!)

  1. Woha, congrats on those 1,009 pages! Amazing! And more you'll add after your stay-at-home Saturday. I'm so jealous you're having a rainy day.

I'm glad you are enjoying A Reliable Wife more than I did! And yes, I think it all comes to weak writing.

Best of luck for your two remaining days :)

    1. I am definitely adding more - just finished up A Reliable Wife. Rainy days are perfect for reading and I've just ordered a pizza so I don't even have to cook :)

  2. I've always wanted to read the Wheel of Time books, it just seems like such a big commitment! I guess there's nowhere better to start but the first book, though, right? I'm pretty sure I'd love them.

    1. They are easier reads than their size suggests. You should give the first one a try and if you like it we could read the series together?

  3. You're having such a good week! I'm really enjoying picking my books at random this week. I finished the two I wanted to and then I had my shelves to pick from at random which was great. It definitely works to not be strict about book choices. I hope the rest of your week is wonderful too :)

    1. Every week not at work is a good reading week! :P
Picking at random from shelves can be amazing or it can be daunting, I'm glad you've enjoyed it though.

  4. Seems like you are having a lovely time :) I really need to take a fantasy book in between all those others, especially lately I've realised that I miss the genre very much.

    1. I know what you mean, I used to read a lot of fantasy but I went for a few years without reading it and now it's pretty much all I read. I am a fickle reader!

  5. Impressive reading! Although I can read books with my kids and some nonfiction thrown in with whatever novel I'm reading, I can't read more than one novel at a time for myself. My old brain isn't flexible enough anymore. Enjoy the bout of books!

  6. I reread and finished the WOT series earlier this year, and I'm so glad I did. It was great to revisit the characters and see how if all finally ended. I have been spreading out the reviews though.

  7. I haven't read the Wheel of Time series but it seems like something I would like! Storybook Love/Fables sounds interesting! I don't really read graphic novels but I always want to!

My original goal in my head was four then I lowered it because stuff came up, then I put it back at four and I've read five so far! I might try to go ahead and finish another one but I'm not sure it'll happen.

  8. I think I'd get all panicky during bout of books if I was reading multiple books as it would look like I wasn't achieving anything!
