Bout of Books Update: First Two and a Half Days

Already my Bout of Books TBR has gone out of the window!  I started in a good position on Monday as I had just finished a book on Sunday night for the Dog Days of Summer readathon, so I was able to choose whatever book I felt like to read.  I was all set to pick one from the TBR pile when my husband suggested we visit a larger town near us that has the best library ever.  It's in the same county, so my card still works, and they had so many good books that I couldn't resist checking out a few.  When I got home, I started reading Dare Me by Megan Abbott, which I've been meaning to read for ages now.

Dare Me turned out to be a good readathon pick as it's completely addictive.  It's superficially about a group of high school cheerleaders but it's really about obsession and the darker side of adolescence.  I couldn't put it down and finished it up Tuesday lunchtime.

Next, I picked up The Reliable Wife, which I am reading with the lovely Elena from Books and Reviews.  It's about a man who orders a bride but it doesn't go quite as he planned.  It promises to be a gothic type of story and although I like where the plot seems to be going, I'm not a big fan of the writing style so far, especially the point of view shifts mid chapter.  I like it enough to continue it, but it's not turning out to be as good as I had hoped.  I've read 50 pages so far.

And then on a whim, I picked up The Eye of the World last night, book one in the massively epic Wheel of Time series.  I have read this book before, I think I got up to book eight when I was at university and then I abandoned the series when Robert Jordan passed away and what was going to happen with the series seemed uncertain.  However, the series is completed now (fourteen books!) and I really did enjoy them, so for a few months I've been thinking about rereading and then finishing the series.  I picked up The Eye of the World only intending to read a few pages but I was soon sucked in and it's now too late - I'm going to have to read them all!  I'm currently up to page 118.

For the rest of today, I'll be continuing with A Reliable Wife and Eye of the World.

Stats so far:

Books Started: 3
Books Completed: 1 (Dare Me by Megan Abbott)
Pages Read: 326 + 50 + 118 = 494

  1. Ha! Mine totally went off track, too. And as book mail keeps coming, I'm more and more tempted to break my own rules and pick up something else once I'm done with one of these books. Your page count is great, though - hope the rest of your week goes well!

    1. Go on - break the rules!
I'm loving all the readathons at the moment, I'm still on summer hols for two weeks more, so it's the perfect time to lose myself in books completely.

  2. Sounds like you've had a great start to the read-a-thon! Dare Me definitely sounds interesting, I might have to scout out a copy of that one from somewhere. I'm pretty much sticking to my goals for the time being, mostly because today's been a complete washout reading-wise so far! I've woken up with a cracking headache and got ALL THE GRUMPY CUSTOMERS in the bookshop this morning, so I'm hopping around the Bout of Books participants for a while instead... :)

    Happy reading for day 3!

    1. Dare Me was interesting, it had a unique writing style. Congrats on sticking to your goals, even in the face of grumpy customers. As a teacher, I'm lucky enough to be on summer holiday at the moment.

    1. It is daunting in theory but not in practice. I had no trouble getting to book 7 or 8 last time, you should start them :)

  4. Blimey, how many pagesis there in The Eye of the World? It looks like quite a hefty book!

I can't read more than one at a time, but it sounds like you're doing well with all three :)

    1. It's 800+, so should keep me going throughout the whole readathon.
I normally only read one book at a time but when I am off work I find that I can handle more than one, as I'm less mentally exhausted!

  5. Oh dear, I would totally give up A Reliable Wife had we not planned on reading it together. I am eager to talk to you about it becuase I'm finding it too vulgar and looking to strike the reader as daring, but it is just that, vulgar.

Best of luck on keeping reading and I'm very glad you enjoyed other books.

    1. To be honest the vulguar-ness isn't bothering me (I've read Tampa recently, so think I am now immune!), but the writing is. It just seems to amateur.
But we can have a good conversation about this book, that's for sure!

  6. At least you're reading, even if it's not what you initially had in mind. Keep up the mojo! :)

  7. Well done on your reading so far Sam! I read robert Goolrick's new book earlier this year, it was very good. I've got A Reliable Wife on my to read pile, so I'll look forward to your review. Hope you enjoy your reading for the rest of the readathon.

  8. Pretty impressive progress so far! I suspect our piles of unread books quake in their dustjackets when they overhear us talking about libraries. I picked up The Crane Wife the other day and I know I'll end up reading that before anything else on my pile...sorry guys.

I hope you are still having a fab reading week :D

  9. I just read books started as books completed and I was like THREE?! What an overachiever hehehehe! But YAY reading, is my main point here :)

  10. At least you're reading some good books and not just putting them aside! I know what you mean by making up goals and getting sidetracked! I always have that happening to me.
