More intimidating in the flesh!

I posted a few weeks ago about a reading slump and how I had sourced a collection of sixteen Dickens books in gorgeous editions as a motivation to get on and read.  And more than that, get on and read quality books over the summer holidays.

Well.  My collection arrived today and safe to say sixteen Dickens books are much more intimidating in the flesh than they are on a computer screen.  So bulky, such thin paper, such a small font!  They do look good all together but I think I will be working on this collection for quite some time.....

In other news, my summer holidays start in just two days time.  I can not wait!

  1. Hello Sam!

Book flesh? That has a nice wring to it :D WOW! I've only read Oliver Twist and it was a "children"'s version of it. I'm curious to read your reviews!

    1. Kirthi, I've only read A Christmas Carol and it was years ago so Dickens is all new to me. I will read them at a slow pace and spaced out, I think! :P

  3. Sam,
Have a great summer holiday-- I know you totally deserve every second of relaxation! And Dickens sounds like so much more than I could ever complete- so best of luck!

Thanks for the kind words, Sam. It really meant a lot.

  4. Oh my! Each of those piles looks intimidating, and together it's just... too much!

Also, may I ask if you also got I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings from The Book People too? Cause I totally ordered the 6 book series thing that was like £3! (Damn I'm going to feel bad if that's not what you did too... hehe)

    1. I ordered some books for the children in my class too and it came in two boxes. I was all "the big box must be the 30 books for the kids" but no, it was the Dickens! They are much chunkier than I had expected.

I actually got I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings ages ago in a charity shop, my edition is from the 80s. Don't feel bad though, I'm about 70% of the way through and it's an excellent book.

    1. Lindsay, the covers are gorgeous, but I am a bit disappointed with the page quality, I expected nice silky pages and they are a bit rough.

I'll probably start with Oliver. We put on a production of it at school and so it's all fresh in my mind, not as scary as the rest!

  8. Such "Great Expectations" to expect all the collection to arrive. I hope you don't have too much of a "Hard Time" trying to read all of them and that you don't feel like you are living in a "Bleak House" with Oliver Twist and Nicholas Nickleby as your company!

Lol enjoy your loot. They look fab. It is often the case that Vintage pages are rough, almost feel like recycled.

    1. I like what you did there Jo! :P
And yes, most disappointed in the paper quality, especially when compared to how nice the covers are!

  10. Wow!! I was in B & Noble last night looking at the Dostoevsky books. I was tempted to buy 5 of them.....It is intimidating. I have Dickens on my TBR list this year as I have never read anything by him. I always watch the movies. I'm stuck on which one to start with...I was thinking David Copperfield, but that was a bit intimidating.
